The Consortium of Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Diseases and the International Gastrointestinal Eosinophil Researchers organized a day-long symposium at the recent 2018 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, which was coupled for the first time with the World Allergy Organization meeting to create an international platform.
The symposium featured experts in many facets of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases, including allergy, immunology, gastroenterology, pathology, and nutrition, and was a well-attended event. The basic science, genetics, cellular immunology, and clinical features of the diseases, with a focus on epithelial, eosinophil, and mast cell responses, as well as current and emerging treatment options, were reviewed. Here we briefly review some of the highlights of the material presented at the meeting.
Promoting and achieving excellence in the delivery of Integrated Allergy Care: the European Academy of Allergy & Clinical Immunology competencies for allied health professionals working in allergy.
The multi-disciplinary team approach is an effective model for patient care. Allied health professionals (AHPs) are an important part of such teams, bringing specific knowledge and skills related to the target patient population. The AHPs most often involved in allergy care are nurses and dietitians. Nurses are often involved in the care of patients with all types of allergy and also with asthma, whilst allergy-specialist dietitians provide vital nutritional and dietary support for the diagnosis and management of food allergy.
There are many other AHPs who have a role to play in allergy care, including physiotherapists, psychologists, pharmacists and speech therapists, and their involvement is likely to develop as allergy care becomes more rooted in the community.
With the development of multi-professional teams comes the requirement for disease-specific knowledge and skill sets, with all allergy team members required to have baseline knowledge and competency of the condition being managed. Whilst some competencies for AHPs practising in other disease states have been published, none are available for allergic disease against which AHPs can be benchmarked.

CytoSelect MTT Cell Proliferation Assay |
|||
CBA-252 | Cell Biolabs | 960 assays | EUR 490.8 |
Description: Cell Biolabs? CytoSelect MTT Cell Proliferation Assay provides a colorimetric format for measuring and monitoring cell proliferation. The kit contains sufficient reagents for the evaluation of 960 assays in 96-well plates or 192 assays in 24-well plates. Cells can be plated and then treated with compounds or agents that affect proliferation. Cells are then detected with the proliferation reagent, which is converted in live cells from the yellow tetrazole MTT to the purple formazan form by a cellular reductase (Figure 1). An increase in cell proliferation is accompanied by an increased signal, while a decrease in cell proliferation (and signal) can indicate the toxic effects of compounds or suboptimal culture conditions. The assay principles are basic and can be applied to most eukaryotic cell lines, including adherent and non-adherent cells and certain tissues. This cell proliferation reagent can be used to detect proliferation in bacteria, yeast, fungi, protozoa as well as cultured mammalian and piscine cells. |

Radius 24-Well Cell Migration Assay |
|||
CBA-125 | Cell Biolabs | 24 assays | EUR 602.4 |
Description: The Radius Cell Migration Assay provides a unique alternative to conventional cell migration assays using the Boyden chamber. When cells are seeded in the well, they will attach everywhere except on the Radius gel, creating a cell-free zone. Following cell seeding the Radius gel is removed, allowing migratory cells to move across the area and close the gap. |

Upon entering metabolically active live cells, the non-fluorescent proliferation reagent is converted into a bright red fluorescent form. An increase in cell proliferation is accompanied by increased fluorescent signal, while a decrease in cell proliferation (and signal) can indicate the toxic effects of compounds or suboptimal culture conditions. The kit contains sufficient reagents for the evaluation of 960 assays in ten 96-well plates or 192 assays in eight 24-well plates. |
CytoSelect BrdU Cell Proliferation ELISA Kit |
|||
CBA-251 | Cell Biolabs | 96 assays | EUR 637.2 |
Description: The CytoSelect BrdU Cell Proliferation ELISA Kit detects BrdU incorporated into cellular DNA during cell proliferation using an anti-BrdU antibody. When cells are incubated in media containing BrdU, the pyrimidine analog is incorporated in place of thymidine into the newly synthesized DNA of proliferating cells. Once the labeling media is removed, the cells are fixed and the DNA is denatured in one step with a fix/denature solution (denaturation of the DNA is necessary to improve the accessibility of the incorporated BrdU for detection). Then an anti-BrdU mouse monoclonal antibody is added followed by an HRP conjugated secondary antibody to detect the incorporated BrdU. The magnitude of the absorbance for the developed color is proportional to the quantity of BrdU incorporated into cells and can be directly correlated to cell proliferation. |
CytoSelect Cell Proliferation Assay Reagent (Colorimetric) |
|||
CBA-253 | Cell Biolabs | 10 mL | EUR 490.8 |
Description: Cell Biolabs? CytoSelect WST-1 Cell Proliferation Assay Reagent provides a colorimetric format for measuring and monitoring cell proliferation. The 10 mL volume is sufficient for the evaluation of 960 assays in ten 96-well plates or 192 assays in eight 24-well plates. Cells can be plated and then treated with compounds or agents that affect proliferation. Cells are then detected with the proliferation reagent, which is converted in live cells from WST-1 to the formazan form in the presence of cellular NADH and an electron mediator. An increase in cell proliferation is accompanied by increased signal, while a decrease in cell proliferation (and signal) can indicate the toxic effects of compounds or suboptimal culture conditions. |

ViraDuctin AAV Transduction Kit (10 Transductions) |
|||
AAV-200 | Cell Biolabs | 10 transductions | EUR 505.2 |
Description: The process by which adeno-associated virus (AAV) infects host cells includes viral binding and entry, intracellular trafficking, nuclear transport, and viral second strand DNA synthesis. The second strand DNA synthesis has been shown to be the rate limiting step, which leads to inefficient transduction by AAV vectors. ViraDuctin AAV Transduction Kit is a proprietary, multi-reagent formulation designed to increase the efficiency of transduction by AAV vectors. Reagent preparation takes only 10 minutes prior to host cell infection. |

The European Academy of Allergy & Clinical Immunology (EAACI) recognised this need, and supported the establishment of a Task Force to develop allergy-focussed competencies for AHPs. The varied skills, expertise and professional background of the Task Force members enabled the creation of a set of allergy competencies relevant to all AHPs working in allergy. It is recognised that the training and allergy expertise of AHPs, and their role within the allergy setting, will vary considerably depending on the country.
However, it is important for patient care, that all AHP involved in allergy services have access to training, of a sufficiently high enough level to be aspirational and enable the continued growth and development of a wide range of allergy services, given the increasing need.
The EAACI competencies will provide an important benchmark for allergy knowledge and skills against which education and training can be designed and health care professionals can subsequently be measured. However, more importantly, the EAACI AHP allergy competencies will enable the development and reach of specialist allergy services, with allergy-specialist AHPs undertaking key roles, especially in the community care setting.
